Connecticut activists back President Biden’s proposal to raise Social Security benefits

President Joe Biden signed the Social Security Fairness Act into law, which will result in millions of Americans seeing higher social security payments in 2025. This act will repeal two provisions, the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset, that have limited benefits for retirees, their spouses, and family members. Activists like Bette Marafino and Kate Dias of Connecticut played a key role in advocating for this change, particularly for teachers, police officers, firefighters, and public servants who are eligible for other pensions.

Marafino and Dias stated that more than 32,000 people in Connecticut are not receiving their full social security benefits and are set to benefit from this act. The bipartisan bill also includes provisions for back-payments starting from January 2024. President Biden mentioned during the signing that the average increase in payments could be around $360 per month. The signing of this act marks a significant victory for these activists and will provide financial relief to many Americans.
