Trump pays respects to Jimmy Carter in Capitol Rotunda alongside other visitors – NBC Connecticut

President-elect Donald Trump paid his respects to former President Jimmy Carter in the Capitol Rotunda as the 39th president lies in state ahead of his funeral. Despite past criticism of Carter, Trump plans to attend the funeral at Washington National Cathedral. Carter, who passed away at the age of 100, received a stream of visitors paying their respects, including members of Congress and former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

As the nation mourns Carter’s passing, the United States Postal Service will halt operations for a national day of observance. Visitors at the Capitol recalled personal connections to Carter’s 1976 campaign, highlighting his reputation for honesty, character, integrity, and selflessness. Carter’s humanitarian work beyond politics was also remembered during official ceremonies, with Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune eulogizing him.

Carter’s state funeral at Washington National Cathedral is set for 10 a.m. Eastern Thursday, where President Biden, a longtime ally of Carter, will deliver a eulogy. Living former presidents, including Trump, are expected to attend. Following the funeral, Carter will be flown back to Georgia on Air Force One for an invitation-only funeral at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, where he will be buried next to his wife. The nation pays tribute to Carter’s legacy of kindness, compassion, and genuine character that touched the lives of many.
