Emergency overnight warming shelters in Norwich, Connecticut, are facing a funding crisis. The warming shelter, which opened just weeks ago, is running out of money, potentially leaving people without a place to stay. With only 8 to 10 days of funding left, there are concerns about the 79 individuals who are unsheltered in the area. Calls have been made for the state legislature to provide funding for a permanent overnight shelter in Norwich, starting from the 2025 to 2026 winter season.
State Sen. Cathy Osten has shown support for more funding for overnight shelters in the eastern part of the state, recognizing the crisis in Norwich. If additional funds are not secured, the Thames Valley Center Community Action may be limited in their ability to provide shelter. Despite an original end date of tomorrow, Gov. Ned Lamont has extended the emergency protocol to Friday, ensuring that the shelter will remain open for one more day than planned.
