CT lawmakers angered by conditional release of cannibal and murder suspect

Connecticut Republican lawmakers are outraged by the conditional release of Tyree Smith, a man who was serving time in a high-security psychiatric hospital for killing a man and eating parts of his body. Smith had been arrested for the murder of Angel Gonzalez in 2011 and was ordered to stay at the hospital for up to 60 years by a three-judge panel in 2013. Despite opposition from Gonzalez’s family, the hospital applied for Smith’s conditional release last month, which was granted on Friday.

The lawmakers criticized the decision, calling it “outrageous” and “mind-boggling,” and expressed concerns for public safety. State Sen. Heather Somers, Sen. Paul Cicarella, Sen. Henri Martin, and Senate Minority Leader Stephen Harding issued a joint statement condemning the release. State Rep. Devin Carney also voiced concerns about Smith being a risk to the public and introduced a bill to prioritize public safety during evaluation hearings. The decision has sparked outrage and raised questions about the justice system’s handling of violent offenders.
