Mexico Claims 2-1 Victory Over USMNT in Gold Cup Final for Repeat Win – NBC Connecticut

Mexico Clinches Back-to-Back Gold Cup Titles with 2-1 Win Over U.S.

HOUSTON, Texas — Mexico secured the Gold Cup championship for the second consecutive year, triumphing over the U.S. men’s national team with a 2-1 comeback victory on Sunday.

The match began dramatically, with the U.S. taking an early lead just four minutes in. Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter swung in a precise free-kick that Chris Richards headed into the net, marking a second successful set-piece connection between the two players after their earlier collaboration in the tournament.

However, Mexico quickly gained momentum. In the 27th minute, Marcel Ruiz delivered a slick pass to Raul Jimenez, who, with his weaker left foot, struck the ball past U.S. goalkeeper Tim Ream. This equalizer set the stage for a dominant performance by Mexico in the second half, as they outplayed the U.S. and forced the defense into a reactive stance.

The decisive moment came in the 77th minute when Johan Vasquez’s flicked header allowed Edson Alvarez to find the back of the net. After an initial offside call, VAR confirmed the goal stood, putting Mexico ahead.

Despite late chances from U.S. forwards Patrick Agyemang and Alex Freeman to level the score, Mexico’s defense held firm, marking an end to the match and securing another Gold Cup victory.

With this win, Mexico claimed its 10th Gold Cup title, extending its lead in the tournament’s history. Head coach Javier Aguirre led an experienced squad, while the U.S., under Mauricio Pochettino, faced challenges due to missing key players like Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie.

The U.S. now looks ahead to the 2026 World Cup, needing to assess its lineup in preparation for future competitions, with emerging talents like Diego Luna highlighting potential pathways for the national team’s evolution.
