Connecticut is set to receive $1 million in federal funding to address gun violence, ghost guns, and streamline red flag laws, as announced by state leaders. This funding is part of an executive order by President Joe Biden and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. The announcement comes after Mike Song shared the tragic story of losing his 15-year-old son Ethan to an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound in 2018.
Hartford has seen success in reducing gun violence through community-based intervention efforts, which Mayor Arunan Arulampalam highlighted. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy announced the federal funding, emphasizing the importance of implementing and enforcing red flag statutes to prevent guns from falling into dangerous hands.
The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act has been instrumental in the decline of shooting victims in Hartford and other cities. The executive order also strengthens laws, like Ethan’s Law, which requires gun owners to securely store firearms when minors are present. Song expressed gratitude for the executive order, as it brings awareness to the importance of gun safety and prevention measures.
The funding allocated to Connecticut is part of $135 million distributed nationwide to enhance red flag statutes, law enforcement training, and school district initiatives. This investment aims to support efforts in reducing gun violence and promoting gun safety across the state.
