Temporary Hold on DOGE Access to Sensitive Treasury Department Payment Systems by Federal Judge

A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order blocking political appointees and special government employees, including those working for the Department of Government Efficiency, from accessing sensitive information in the Treasury Department. This decision came after 19 state attorneys general sued the federal government, alleging that tech mogul Elon Musk and his DOGE staffers had no authority to access confidential Treasury Department data. The order requires those who had previous access to sensitive data to destroy any downloaded material. A hearing is scheduled for February 14 to discuss a preliminary injunction. The White House and Department of Justice did not comment. In a similar case in Washington, union members and retirees sued the government for violating privacy laws by allowing DOGE staffers to access Treasury Department data. The Trump administration agreed to limit access to the data for all but two DOGE staffers and promised that they would only have “read only” access to payment records. One of the DOGE staffers, Marko Elez, resigned after being linked to a social media account with racist views. Vice President JD Vance defended Elez, but Musk promised to reinstate him in his role at DOGE.
