Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has accepted an invitation from CBS News for a vice presidential debate against Ohio Sen. JD Vance on October 1. The proposal was made by CBS for the two candidates to face off on stage weeks before Election Day. Walz responded with a post on X, saying “See you on October 1, JD.” A Harris campaign official confirmed that they had accepted the invitation to the debate, and Walz looks forward to debating Vance if he shows up.
While Walz responded promptly to the invitation, Vance did not immediately comment on the proposal and did not respond to shouted questions about it on the tarmac in Kentucky. CBS had proposed four dates as options for the debate: September 17, September 24, October 1, and October 8. They are waiting for responses from both candidates.
Former President Donald Trump had previously mentioned that his campaign had agreed to participate in a vice presidential debate on CBS News, commending Vance for a fantastic job. However, no specific date was given for this debate. Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have agreed to a September 10 debate hosted by ABC. Overall, the stage is set for a potentially impactful vice presidential debate between Walz and Vance on October 1, pending Vance’s response.
