Connecticut Man Admits to Stray-Bullet Shooting of Olympian’s Mother in 2022

Connecticut man Jasper Greene has pleaded guilty to murder in the stray-bullet killing of Mabel Martinez Antongiorgi, the mother of Puerto Rican Olympic athlete Yarimar Mercado Martinez. Martinez Antongiorgi was killed on April 9, 2022, in Waterbury, Connecticut, when a bullet flew through her home and struck her in the head. Greene, along with two other men, was involved in the shooting due to a dispute one of the suspects had with another man. The suspects mistakenly shot up a car parked on the street, believing the man was inside. Another bystander was wounded but survived. Greene faces a 35-year sentence for murder as part of his plea deal, with the possibility of arguing for 30 years at his June 3 sentencing. The mandatory minimum sentence for murder in Connecticut is 25 years. Franklin Robinson, another suspect, has been charged in the case and is awaiting trial, while the third suspect, Levi Brock, has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including murder. Yarimar Mercado Martinez was competing in Brazil when her mother was tragically killed.
