Trump is contemplating ending federal grants for police departments that refuse to engage in mass deportations

Donald Trump’s campaign is considering withholding federal police grants from local law enforcement agencies that refuse to participate in the largest mass deportation of undocumented immigrants in U.S. history if he is re-elected. This move could prompt legal challenges, similar to the first Trump administration. Sanctuary cities and states currently do not cooperate with ICE by alerting them when they encounter or arrest undocumented immigrants. Trump has vowed to round up immigrants with criminal records or final orders of deportation, totaling nearly 1.9 million individuals. To pressure local law enforcement agencies, the Trump team plans to cut off their access to federal justice funding through the Byrne JAG grant program. During Trump’s first term, several states sued after Byrne JAG grants were cut off to sanctuary cities, but the administration was ultimately supported by an appeals court. If re-elected, Trump officials are confident they can quickly get legal challenges to the Supreme Court where they believe the conservative majority will back them. Additionally, a second Trump administration would offer additional funding to police departments that participate in the mass deportations. Former acting director of ICE, Ron Vitiello, expressed frustration at the legal battles during Trump’s first term and suggested offering incentives or leverage to encourage compliance with the deportation efforts.
