Ukrainian authorities have issued air raid alerts across the country as Russian bombers carried out further deadly strikes following a “massive” attack on Ukraine’s power grid. The Ukrainian air force confirmed the takeoff of Russian Tu-95MS bombers from an airfield in western Russia. Overnight, two people were killed in a strike on a hotel in Kryvyi Rih, while two were killed in drone attacks on Zaporizhzhia. Kyiv and other regions were under air raid alerts throughout the night.
The Washington-based Institute for the Study of War noted that Moscow may lack the capacity to sustain such massive strikes consistently. On Monday, Russia fired hundreds of drones and missiles at Ukraine, killing at least seven and causing widespread blackouts and water outages. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy described it as one of the largest Russian attacks, with most missiles and drones being shot down.
Numerous countries, including the US, Britain, and Germany, condemned the assault. Power cuts were announced by Ukrenergo, and train schedules were disrupted. Since invading in February, Russia has launched repeated large-scale drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, targeting energy facilities and claiming they were aiding Ukraine’s military industries. Nato member Poland reported airspace violations during the attacks.
Zelenskiy called for European air forces to assist in downing drones and missiles in the future. The attacks come after a Reuters safety adviser was killed in a strike, and several members of the agency’s crew were injured. The Kremlin stated there was no clarity regarding the strike when asked about Zelenskiy’s claim that it was deliberate.
