Vice President Kamala Harris and the White House have criticized former President Donald Trump for politicizing the federal response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Harris emphasized the need for leadership to recognize the dignity of those affected by the storms and condemned attempts to play politics amid the crisis. President Joe Biden slammed Trump and his supporters for spreading misinformation about federal assistance available to victims.
Hurricane Milton, a category 3 storm, devastated parts of Florida, leading to at least 11-16 reported deaths and leaving millions without power. Trump and Harris both visited key swing states strategically despite the storm, aiming to garner support from crucial voting blocs.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities rescuing at least 340 people and 49 pets in the aftermath of the hurricane. The storm prompted a coordinated effort to relocate vulnerable animals in shelters to safety.
As residents continue to repair the damage and assess the impact of Hurricane Milton, relief workers and evacuated residents are returning to the affected areas. Gas shortages and damaged infrastructure are still challenges in the aftermath of the storm. Florida theme parks, including Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando, plan to reopen after assessing the effects of the storm. Orlando International Airport is set to resume departures for domestic and international flights after minor damage was reported.
