Connecticut State Rep. Jaime Foster has introduced proposed legislation to ban the sale of small liquor bottles known as “nips” or “shooters”. The bill aims to address concerns about impaired driving and accessibility to alcohol, with Foster citing littering patterns as evidence of in-car use. The proposed legislation sets a minimum size for liquor containers, effectively eliminating the sale of most nips. However, not everyone is on board with the ban. Lawrence Cafero of the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of Connecticut believes the focus should be on the drink itself, not just the bottle size. Republican State Rep. David Rutigliano also opposes the blanket ban, suggesting that addressing road safety concerns related to other substance use may be a more pressing issue. Despite some bipartisan agreement, the likelihood of the bill passing in this year’s legislative session remains low, as similar efforts have failed in the past. Nonetheless, Foster sees value in starting a conversation about the issue.
