NFL Players Cleared to Use Smelling Salts Amid New Policy Clarification
The NFL announced that players will continue to use "smelling salts" during games, following a recent clarification regarding the league’s new policy. In a memo sent to players on Wednesday, the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) confirmed that while the NFL prohibited team employees from distributing smelling salts and ammonia inhalants, players themselves are still permitted to use these substances.
The controversy erupted after the NFL sent out a memo on Tuesday, which explicitly banned club personnel from providing ammonia-based products during pregame activities, games, and halftimes. The league’s decision was influenced by a warning from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicating that there is insufficient evidence for the safety and effectiveness of these products, as they could potentially mask concussion symptoms.
In its response, the NFLPA clarified that it was not notified of this policy change prior to the league’s announcement. The players’ association stressed that the policy only restricts club personnel from supplying the products, not the players from using them. "The NFL Players Association is aware of the memo issued by the league Tuesday regarding the use of smelling salts… This policy does not prohibit player use of these substances," the memo stated.
Historically, smelling salts have been a mainstay on NFL sidelines, with many players claiming they offer a quick boost of energy and alertness. While the debate around their safety continues, players can still reach for these capsules as they take the field.
This development marks a significant moment in the evolving conversation around player safety and performance-enhancing practices in professional football.
