Man Accused of Stalking and Attempted Kidnapping of Memphis Mayor Armed with Taser, Tape, and Rope

Trenton Abston, a 25-year-old man, has been charged with stalking and attempting to kidnap Memphis Mayor Paul Young after he was found in the neighborhood with a Taser, rope, duct tape, and gloves. He is currently in Shelby County Jail without bail, with a court appearance scheduled for Friday. Police indicated that Abston was targeting Mayor Young, as he was seen going door-to-door in a subdivision that includes the mayor’s residence. Security footage captured him scaling a wall and approaching the mayor’s home, where he knocked on the door while exhibiting a nervous demeanor.

Memphis police have reassured residents about their commitment to safety following this incident, particularly in light of recent high-profile political violence, such as the murder charge against Vance Boelter, who allegedly killed a Democratic state representative and wounded others in Minnesota. The police department is aware of the escalating concerns regarding political safety and has emphasized their dedication to protecting all residents, including elected officials.

Mayor Young commented on the need for civil political discourse, especially given the increasing threats he and his family receive. He urged for a collective effort to reduce hatred and create a supportive community, stating that “none of us can be too careful” in the current climate. Young called for unity and love among community members, regardless of differing political beliefs, to foster a safer environment for everyone.

The public defender’s office has not yet commented on Abston’s legal representation.
