Westerly Rotary Club Celebrates Joe Nigrelli Sr. Ahead of 100th Birthday
Westerly, RI — On June 9, The Rotary Club of Westerly gathered to celebrate one of its most cherished members, Joe Nigrelli Sr., ahead of his 100th birthday on June 22. Friends, family, and fellow Rotarians came together to honor Joe, a true hometown hero known for his captivating storytelling.
The gathering featured touching memories shared by Joe, who recounted his experiences as a tail gunner in the Pacific during World War II, a pivotal moment in American history. He also shared heartfelt stories about his late wife, Helen Grills Nigrelli, whom he was married to for an impressive 68 years, and his journey in learning to play the saxophone.
Having been a dedicated member of the Rotary Club for 56 years, Joe’s contributions and charisma have made a significant impact on the Westerly community. The celebration was organized just ahead of a busy week for the Rotary, as members prepare to serve as the sole food vendor at the Chorus of Westerly’s Summer Pops concert in Wilcox Park, scheduled for Saturday with a potential rain date on Sunday. Club members expressed their desire to honor Joe before their upcoming commitments, ensuring that he received ample recognition for his remarkable life and legacy.
