LARCHWOOD, IA (Dakota News Now) – Karl Palmberg, owner of Sunlight and Rain Grass Fed Beef, has adopted innovative virtual fencing technology, marking a significant advancement in sustainable cattle management. After a decade of research, Palmberg implemented the Gallagher e-Shepherd system, designed to enhance cattle grazing and overall farming efficiency.
The system utilizes a collar that emits an audible tone and, if needed, delivers a mild shock when cattle approach pre-determined boundaries. With Palmberg handling fencing setup from his computer in less than a minute, the collars rely on a lithium-ion battery and a cellular network, updating every ten minutes to ensure the cattle remain within designated areas using GPS.
This technology is particularly beneficial for Palmberg, whose grass-fed cattle undergo constant rotation across his property. "The main reason I did it is to enhance the nutrient value of our beef," he explained. After just weeks of using the technology, Palmberg expressed enthusiasm, stating it has transformed his operation and vowed to continue innovating as the technology evolves and becomes more affordable.
While citing its numerous advantages, Palmberg notes that virtual fencing may not suit all ranchers. "If your goal is merely to monitor your herd, it may not be worthwhile. But for those committed to intensive rotational grazing and regenerative agriculture, the time savings are substantial," he advised.
Despite an initial adjustment period for the cattle, Palmberg reports a smooth transition to the new system, which he believes has restored balance to his life, enabling him to travel with family and attend events without constant concern for his herd. As he looks to the future, Palmberg is optimistic about the growing adoption of virtual fencing in agriculture.
