Dozens of CT Hunting and Fishing Licenses Suspended in 2024: Here’s the Reason

Press Release

Connecticut Sees Decline in Hunting and Fishing License Sales Amid Enforcement Actions

During last year’s hunting and fishing season, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) suspended or revoked approximately 62 licenses, primarily affecting anglers. This is a substantial concern for state officials, as it coincides with a troubling overall trend of declining license sales in the state.

James Fowler, a DEEP spokesperson, noted that most suspensions last for six months, while more serious infractions can lead to year-long suspensions or even lifetime bans. In 2024, non-resident licenses saw a slight uptick, with sales rising from 189 to 199 permits, although overall license sales remain down. For example, resident firearm hunting licenses decreased from 9,469 in 2023 to 9,224 last year.

Fishing license sales also recorded a drop, with last year’s figure at 188,896 licenses, generating $3.2 million, down from 209,507 licenses and $4.1 million in 2020. Common violations leading to suspensions included illegal fishing in reservoirs and exceeding catch limits.

Hunting violations pose a more serious challenge, often leading to longer suspensions. Notable cases include an 81-year-old hunter who received a one-year suspension after accidentally injuring another hunter. DEEP enforces compliance rigorously, and individuals with suspended licenses must halt all hunting and fishing activities immediately.

Fowler emphasized that license holders have the right to appeal suspensions, and certain safety courses may be required for reinstatement. As Connecticut grapples with dwindling participation in hunting and fishing, the focus remains on preserving the state’s natural resources while promoting responsible outdoor recreation.
