Former Student Opens Fire at Austrian School, Resulting in 10 Deaths Before Taking His Own Life

Tragic School Shooting in Graz, Austria Claims 10 Lives

GRAZ, Austria (AP) — In a devastating incident on Tuesday, a former student opened fire at a high school in Graz, Austria, killing 10 individuals and injuring numerous others before taking his own life. The 21-year-old assailant, who had no prior run-ins with law enforcement and legally owned two firearms, struck just after 10 a.m. at BORG Dreierschützengasse, located near the city’s historic center.

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker described it as a "dark day" for the nation, declaring it a "national tragedy" accompanied by three days of mourning, including lowered flags and a minute of silence for victims. The police response was swift; over 300 officers, including special forces, evacuated the school and secured the area within 17 minutes.

Among the deceased, six were female and three male, with additional updates later confirming a 10th victim, an adult woman, had succumbed to her injuries. The Red Cross deployed extensive resources to assist the injured and provide psychological counseling to affected families.

This incident marks the deadliest shooting in Austria’s post-World War II history, raising questions about the country’s relatively liberal gun laws.
