Electric Boat Workers Rally for Better Pay and Conditions
NEW LONDON, Conn. — Employees of General Dynamics Electric Boat rallied on Friday, demanding higher wages and improved treatment from their employer ahead of a potential strike. Organized by the UAW Marine Drafters union, the rally at Ocean Beach Park drew hundreds, signaling a growing discontent among nearly 2,000 workers ready to walk out if a contract is not reached by Sunday midnight.
Workers are advocating for better pay, retirement security, cost-of-living adjustments, and respect—expressing frustration over eroding wages and increasing costs. Despite General Dynamics earning over $13 billion in profits in recent years, union representatives claim the company is pushing for higher medical insurance costs while neglecting workers’ needs.
Joanna McClenathan, an Electric Boat designer, shared her struggle to make ends meet while expressing disappointment in the company’s treatment of its employees. She stated, “Many of our members are living paycheck to paycheck… I’m not being valued as an employee.”
With a looming strike, union representatives emphasize the need for workers to feel respected and valued, arguing that poor compensation contributes to labor shortages and production delays. As the deadline approaches, the outcome remains uncertain.
