Microsoft Acknowledges Sale of AI Technology to Israel During Hamas Conflict: ‘No Proof Azure Was Used to Cause Harm’

Microsoft Acknowledges AI Support to Israeli Military Amid Gaza Conflict

Redmond, WA – In a statement released on May 15, Microsoft confirmed its role in providing the Israeli military with advanced artificial intelligence and cloud computing services during the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The tech giant emphasized that its technology was not utilized to inflict harm on individuals, although it has been involved in efforts to locate and rescue Israeli hostages.

Conducting an internal review and seeking an external assessment, Microsoft responded to concerns regarding its technology’s potential misuse. The company noted that it supplies the Israeli Ministry of Defense (IMOD) with various services, including Azure cloud services and AI tools, primarily for cybersecurity protection and operational support. Microsoft stated, “Our relationship with the Israeli military is structured as a standard commercial relationship,” clarifying that IMOD adheres to all stipulated policies.

This latest statement marks Microsoft’s first public admission of involvement since the onset of hostilities on October 7, 2023, following a devastating attack by Hamas that resulted in significant casualties on both sides. Recent reports highlighted a dramatic increase—nearly 200 times—in military applications of commercial AI software post-attack.

While Microsoft maintained that no evidence linked its technology to causing harm, it acknowledged that it occasionally grants special access to functionalities beyond standard agreements. However, the company refrained from providing specific details on how its technologies are utilized by the Israeli military, stating that it lacks visibility into customer operations on their systems.

As the situation in Gaza continues to evolve, Microsoft underscores its commitment to responsible technology use while navigating complex geopolitical landscapes. The company’s statement reiterates its efforts to ensure compliance with its AI Code of Conduct amid rising scrutiny of tech companies’ roles in military affairs.
