UConn’s Legacy Shines as 15 Alumni Take to the Court in 2025 WNBA Season

STORRS, Conn. – As the much-anticipated 2025 WNBA season kicks off this Friday, fifteen former UConn women’s basketball stars find themselves on rosters across ten teams, continuing the program’s legacy of excellence.

Highlighting the slate of games is No. 1 draft pick Paige Bueckers, who is set to make her official WNBA debut in a matchup against the Minnesota Lynx at 7:30 p.m. ET. Other notable contests include the Atlanta Dream facing the Washington Mystics, and the Golden State Valkyries competing in their inaugural game against the Los Angeles Sparks later that evening.

Fans can catch all the action streaming for free on WNBA League Pass and airing on Ion.

This season’s UConn alumni roster is impressive, featuring acclaimed players such as Moriah Jefferson and Kia Nurse (Chicago Sky), Tina Charles, Bria Hartley, and Olivia Nelson-Ododa (Connecticut Sun), and Breanna Stewart, who led the New York Liberty to their first WNBA Finals championship in 2024. Stewart and Napheesa Collier, representing the Minnesota Lynx, were also recognized with All-WNBA and All-Defensive First Team selections.

Looking ahead, Collier is viewed as a frontrunner for the WNBA MVP title in the league’s GM survey, while Bueckers has emerged as the favorite for Rookie of the Year honors.

However, the season won’t feature every UConn star, as Katie Lou Samuelson and Nika Mühl are sidelined due to injuries, and Dorka Juhász along with Lou Lopez Sénéchal will miss the season for personal reasons.

For complete coverage of the 2025 WNBA season and broadcast details, fans can visit the league’s official site. The excitement of this season underscores UConn’s enduring impact on women’s basketball.
