Hazmat Incident at New Canaan Facility: Two Hospitalized and Hundreds Decontaminated
New Canaan, CT – A possible hazmat situation at the Becton Dickinson medical technology facility prompted an emergency response on Thursday, following reports of a suspicious package. According to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, emergency crews arrived to secure the area and quarantine the package as a precaution.
As a result of the incident, between 300 and 350 employees underwent decontamination, involving the use of shower stalls and the collection of personal clothing. Staff members were sent home in protective Tyvek suits, retaining only their car keys. Two individuals were hospitalized but have since been discharged.
Operations at the facility have been suspended until further notice. A spokesperson for Becton Dickinson stated that the item in question would not typically be sent to the location, but they provided no further details. Multiple agencies, including Homeland Security and the FBI, are currently investigating the incident, but state police confirmed that there is no active threat to public safety. The swift response reflects the company’s commitment to safety and adherence to established protocols during such occurrences.
