Press Release: Calls for Resignation Over Handling of Sexual Assault Allegations in Bethany
BETHANY, Conn. (WTNH) — The Democratic Town Committee is urging First Selectwoman Paul Cofrancesco to resign following an independent report that criticized her and the Connecticut State Police for their inadequate response to allegations of child sexual assault against town employee Anthony Mastraneglo.
The investigation revealed that Mastraneglo, who was fired as a substitute teacher after initial allegations, continued to work as a camp counselor for six months despite the accusations. Cofrancesco was informed about the allegations but denied knowledge of their specifics, prompting outrage among parents in the community.
Democratic Town Committee Chair Amy Rushlow condemned Cofrancesco’s actions, stating, “Her ineptitude, malfeasance, and gross neglect have no place in Bethany, especially as its leader.” The report also criticized the Connecticut State Police for their slow investigation, contributing to community frustration.
In response to the investigation, both the director and assistant director of Bethany Parks and Recreation have resigned. Mastraneglo was arrested in June 2024 and faces multiple charges, including sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor. News 8 has reached out to Cofrancesco for comment but is awaiting a response.
