Antioch A.M.E. Church Celebrates Debt-Free Milestone with Mortgage Burning Ceremony
This weekend, Antioch A.M.E. Church in Frankford will commemorate a significant achievement by burning its $500,000 mortgage, fully paid off as of last November. The mortgage, originally taken in 2004 for a major expansion of the church, marks a joyous turning point in the congregation’s long history, which dates back to its founding in 1856.
The extensive renovation, completed in 2007, added classrooms and offices, enhancing the church’s accessibility for all members, including those with disabilities. Rev. Dania Griffin, who has led the church since 2014, praised the original vision behind the project, noting its important impact on the community. "The entire complex is under one roof with easily accessible restrooms—a remarkable change from the past," Griffin explained.
Former church council president Roy Hall highlighted the collective effort behind the expansion, noting that the church community raised $200,000 of the project’s $700,000 cost. Hall, now 75, reminisced about the legacy left by the original project leaders and committee members, whose names were inscribed on the studs of the new walls, symbolizing their enduring contribution to the church’s mission.
A strong collaboration with the Frankford community also played a crucial role in this achievement. Town Manager Sheldon Hudson will address attendees during the ceremony, reflecting the positive relationship fostered over the years.
The historic church, having recovered and rebuilt after fires in 1943 and 1946, remains a cornerstone of the Frankford community, hosting annual events that draw families from across the East Coast. This celebratory event not only honors the financial milestone but also reinforces the church’s commitment to serving the community, a testament to the hard work and sacrifices made by its members.
