New Haven Launches Residential Camera Registry to Aid Crime Solving
The City of New Haven has introduced a new initiative aimed at enhancing crime-solving efforts through community collaboration. Mayor Justin Elicker announced the Residential Camera Registry Program, encouraging residents with RING doorbell cameras to register their devices. This registration will help investigators efficiently access video evidence during investigations.
Mayor Elicker clarified that the program does not allow the New Haven Police Department to continuously monitor live footage; rather, it simply informs them of registered cameras’ locations, streamlining requests for video when needed. This initiative follows the police department’s recent success in solving a murder case at Evergreen Cemetery, where video footage played a crucial role in the swift identification and arrest of a suspect.
Assistant Police Chief David Zannelli noted the importance of gathering evidence through community cameras, stating, "It’s very, very important to us just having more eyes out on the street when a crime occurs." The program is free and open to all New Haven residents with RING cameras, garnering positive feedback from the community, with residents expressing support for fostering a partnership between locals and law enforcement.
