Connecticut Sun Explores Future Options, Including Potential Sale
Hartford, CT—The Connecticut Sun are evaluating various avenues for the franchise’s future, which may include a potential sale, according to team president Jen Rizzotti. Owned by the Mohegan Tribe since its relocation from Orlando in 2003, the Sun has been a trailblazer, being the first WNBA team run by a non-NBA owner and successfully turning a profit.
Rizzotti emphasized that the decision to explore options stems from the Tribe’s commitment to responsible business practices, noting that they are scrutinizing all operational aspects of their enterprises, including the Sun. An investment bank, Allen & Co., has been engaged for the evaluation process.
Despite the recent offseason turmoil, with the departure of the entire starting five, Rizzotti assured fans and players that the franchise remains dedicated to delivering quality performance on the court. She urged the team to concentrate on the upcoming season, commencing Sunday against Washington.
The WNBA is witnessing significant growth, with new franchises announced for next season. As other teams enhance their facilities and investment in player experiences, the Sun continues to practice at their existing locations without plans for new training facilities. The ownership’s commitment to the team’s competitive edge remains steadfast even as potential changes loom.
