Press Release: York Racecourse Opens 2025 Season with Thrilling Events

YORK—The 2025 racing season at York kicked off with an exhilarating series of events, highlighted by the Musidora Stakes and a highly competitive Jorvik Handicap.

In the Jorvik Handicap at 2:10 PM, the strong favorite was William Haggas’s The Reverend, bolstered by a promising fourth-place finish last October. However, it was Karl Burke’s Almosh’her, ridden by Clifford Lee, who triumphed in the opening race. After a fierce battle down the stretch, Almosh’her secured victory by a narrow head over Stressfree.

The Musidora Stakes, a key trial for next month’s Epsom Oaks, followed at 3:45 PM. The race featured six fillies, with Smoken, Whirl, and Go Go Boots all having stakes in the Classic. Aidan O’Brien’s Whirl aimed to extend the stable’s successful streak in Epsom Classic trials. Market interest was high, as all three fillies lingered around the 33-1 mark for the Oaks.

Amid the racing excitement, a noteworthy off-track development emerged: the King and Queen have joined Willie Mullins’s stable as owners. Their horse, Reaching High, is set to debut in a 12-furlong race at Leopardstown this Friday, marking a significant moment in Royal racing history. This will be the first time a horse in Royal colors is trained in Ireland, reflecting a shift in the turf hierarchy amidst the rising prominence of Irish racing.

The day concluded with competitive handicaps and discussions hinting at the future of racing, with a nod to upcoming events including the much-anticipated Dante Stakes. As the turf season unfolds, York Racecourse stands at the forefront, promising thrilling competitions ahead.
