Experts Express Concern Over Increasing Cesarean Section Rates

Rising Cesarean Section Rates in Connecticut Spark Concern

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Cesarean section rates in Connecticut have surged nearly 60% since the late 1990s, with over 35% of births in 2022 performed via C-section—ranking the state fourth highest in the nation. This trend raises concerns among medical professionals, especially the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, who warn that such procedures may be overutilized.

Factors contributing to this increase include preexisting medical conditions and babies in non-ideal positions. However, the National Institutes of Health indicate that many first-time C-sections result from "failure to progress," where labor is deemed prolonged. Certified Nurse Midwife Michelle Telfer notes that the rate of C-sections has escalated from about 20% to as high as 50% in certain areas.

Doula Ashley Miniham emphasizes the importance of patience during labor, arguing that many C-sections may be unnecessary. Though costs and malpractice concerns resonate with providers, they assert that patient safety remains paramount. As healthcare providers aim to balance risks and benefits, expectant mothers are encouraged to inquire about individual delivery rates from their providers for informed decisions.
