Consumers Tackle Grocery Prices Amid Signs of Easing Inflation – NBC Connecticut

Grocery Prices Show Signs of Stabilization, Offering Hope to Shoppers

Shoppers are beginning to see some relief at the grocery store as inflation cools, leading to steadier prices and even declines in certain items. Jacquelyn Gaulin of Wethersfield expressed her frustrations with high prices, noting a bag of chips now costing $6.19. Although she finds grocery shopping tedious, she’s adapting to the ongoing price hikes.

According to the global marketing research firm NIQ, chicken breast prices have risen from $4.98 last April to $5.44 this year, a 9% increase. However, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that grocery prices overall rose only 2.8% in the past year, which is lower than economists anticipated, with a slight 0.1% dip last month attributed to nearly a 13% drop in egg prices due to effective measures against avian flu.

James Mohs, a University of New Haven professor, views this trend positively, emphasizing the importance of consumer confidence and smart shopping strategies. He advises customers to look for deals, compare unit prices, and even pay in cash to control spending. Fellow shopper Danielle Lirao echoes this sentiment, focusing on purchasing only essential items. As prices stabilize, shoppers remain hopeful for further improvements.
