Connecticut Foodshare CEO: Food Insecurity in CT is ‘Deteriorating’

Connecticut Faces Rising Food Insecurity, Reports Connecticut Foodshare

WALLINGFORD, CT – Over 516,000 residents in Connecticut are grappling with food insecurity, marking a troubling increase of over 10% from the previous year, according to a recent report by Connecticut Foodshare. Jason Jakubowski, President and CEO, revealed these findings during an event at the organization’s Wallingford facility on May 14, 2025. This statistic equates to nearly one in seven individuals, significantly impacting vulnerable populations such as children and seniors.

The findings come from Feeding America’s 2025 Map the Meal Gap report, utilizing data from various government agencies. Since the onset of the pandemic, food insecurity in Connecticut has escalated by 40%, challenging efforts to provide adequate support. Unfortunately, federal funding cuts are exacerbating the situation. Approximately 30% of Connecticut Foodshare’s distribution relies on federal commodities, and recent fiscal reductions have led to substantial losses, including 34 truckloads of food worth $1.7 million tied to eliminated programs.

In light of these challenges, local lawmakers are taking action to bridge the gap, while citizens can contribute through various donation efforts to help combat hunger across the state.
