UConn’s Cat Petteys Named 2025 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year
NEW YORK – The University of Connecticut’s standout freshman shortstop Cat Petteys has been awarded the 2025 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, making her just the sixth player in UConn history to earn this accolade. Under head coach Laura Valentino, Petteys joins Grace Jenkins and Jana Sanden as the third player to achieve this honor.
Hailing from Vestal, N.Y., Petteys has played a crucial role in UConn’s remarkable season, contributing to an 18-6 conference record and securing a top-two finish in the BIG EAST regular season. Throughout the season, she demonstrated her prowess with an impressive .427 batting average in conference play, along with ten home runs and 31 RBIs. Additionally, her nine doubles were only second to teammate Jenkins, the Player of the Year.
In total, Petteys has maintained a .416 batting average over 48 games, leading all freshmen in the conference with 12 home runs, 60 hits, and 42 RBIs. Her 12 home runs mark the highest tally ever by a UConn freshman, while her 42 RBIs rank second among freshmen in UConn history.
Petteys showcased her consistency by earning the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week title six times during the season, including four consecutive awards to close the regular season.
The BIG EAST also recognized other top players, with Grace Jenkins being named Player of the Year and Ana Serafinko named Pitcher of the Year. St. John’s grabbed the honor of Coaching Staff of the Year.
