Introducing My New Favorite Player: Ariel Atkins of the Chicago Sky – NBC Connecticut

Chicago Sky Aims for a Comeback in the 2025 WNBA Season

The Chicago Sky is poised for a resurgence this season following a disappointing 10th-place finish last year, which marked their first playoff miss since 2018. In a bid to restore competitiveness, the team has revamped its roster and coaching staff, notably hiring former Las Vegas Aces assistant Tyler Marsh as head coach.

One of the most significant offseason moves was the return of veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot, the franchise leader in assists (2,387) and steals (457). The Sky also secured two-time All-Star Ariel Atkins, a seasoned shooter, in a trade with the Washington Mystics. Atkins, who once steered the Mystics to a championship, aims to play a pivotal role in the Sky’s revival.

Atkins, who faced heartbreak by not making the 2024 U.S. Olympic team, utilizes her experience as a driving force for her foundation dedicated to supporting educators. The Ariel Atkins Foundation, established in 2023, aims to enhance educational resources for teachers and students nationwide. Inspired by her sister’s teaching struggles, Atkins focuses on uplifting the teaching community, providing schools with supplies and financial literacy programs aimed at empowering both students and educators.

As she prepares for her Sky debut on May 17, Atkins emphasizes the importance of community and representation in sports. She advocates for young girls to pursue their dreams, reminding them of the prominent roles women play in various sports spheres. With rising opportunities for women in athletics, including the establishment of leagues like “Unrivaled,” Atkins urges young athletes to embrace their uniqueness and pave their own paths.

“I want to be remembered for caring about the game and the people around me,” she stated. As the Sky gears up for the season, hopes are high for a promising turnaround, with Atkins leading the charge.
