Groton Man Accused of Gruesome Murder Dies in Custody
MONTVILLE, Conn. (WTNH) — Donald Coffel, a 68-year-old Groton man charged with the murder and dismemberment of Suzanne Wormser, has died in custody at the Corrigan Correctional Center. His passing on May 9 is not considered suspicious, according to Connecticut Department of Corrections officials, who stated that the exact cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.
Coffel was facing serious charges after allegedly killing 58-year-old Wormser by striking her in the head with a baseball bat, as detailed in an arrest warrant. Following her death, he reportedly stored her body in their shared apartment for over a week before dismembering it. Body parts were disposed of in garbage bags and a suitcase, which Coffel wheeled to Colonel Ledyard Cemetery, roughly 800 yards from their residence.
The gruesome discovery of a woman’s torso in the suitcase on March 19 led to Coffel’s arrest. He had been arraigned just weeks prior and was being held on a $1 million bond, awaiting further court proceedings. The incident remains under review by both state police and the DOC Security Division as standard protocol following an inmate’s death.
