Danville Gardens to Celebrate 20th Annual Plant Sale Featuring Pollinator-Friendly Plants

Illinois Master Gardeners Celebrate 20th Annual Plant Sale

The Illinois Master Gardeners are gearing up for their highly anticipated 20th annual plant sale this Saturday, May 18, from 8 a.m. to noon at the First Presbyterian Church gymnasium, 100 N. Franklin St., Danville. This year’s event will showcase a diverse assortment of plants, including numerous pollinator-friendly varieties crucial for sustaining our ecosystems.

Master Gardener Ray Knight from Berry’s Nursery & Floral explains the significance of pollinator-friendly gardens. Pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, are essential for the proliferation of about 75% to 95% of flowering plants, contributing to one-third of our global food supply. Knight emphasizes that creating a pollinator garden means providing these vital creatures with food and shelter. Adequate sunlight and water are crucial; plants should ideally receive half a day of sunshine, with some wind protection.

While aesthetic beauty is often a focus, Knight notes that pollinator gardens prioritize functionality over perfection, allowing nature’s workers space to thrive. He advises against cutting back perennials too early, as they often house pollinator larvae.

To attract various pollinators, Knight suggests planting native species well-suited to our region, including red columbine and bee balm, along with annual favorites like zinnias. He highlights the importance of milkweed for Monarch butterflies, as it is the sole food source for their larvae.

Beyond the extensive plant selection, Master Gardeners will be available for questions, fostering a community of knowledge-sharing. "It’s about building connections and sharing expertise, not just about plants," says event organizer Jenney Hanrahan.

Admission and parking are free, with donations accepted for plants. Early arrival is recommended for the best selection. For further details, visit go.illinois.edu/MayPlantSale.
