Cyclists Challenge Proposed Resolution to Reevaluate Bike Lanes in Hartford – NBC Connecticut

Hartford Explores Parking Solutions Amid Cyclist Safety Concerns

Hartford is examining strategies to expand parking options while ensuring the safety of cyclists and pedestrians, but the proposal is facing strong opposition from the cycling community. Cyclists gathered at City Hall to voice their fears over a city council resolution aimed at evaluating the impact of bike lanes on local businesses, particularly regarding concerns about foot traffic due to parking shortages.

Cyclist Jay Stange emphasized, “It’s really important that people can safely get from point A to point B if they don’t have a car,” highlighting recent data showing 230 serious crashes involving pedestrians or cyclists in Hartford over nine years. He warned against imposing restrictions on bike lanes, arguing that safety should take precedence over parking space availability.

Councilmember Maly Rosado, who introduced the resolution, aims to facilitate discussions that will lead to a balanced solution. She reassured residents that the goal is not to remove bike lanes but rather to consider all perspectives while prioritizing public safety and accessibility.

As the resolution moves into committee, Rosado remains committed to creating a safer environment, noting that residents who utilize alternative transportation methods can be greater patrons of local businesses. The decision-making process will unfold over the coming months.
