GEM Conference Empowers Young Men of Color at Southern Connecticut State University
Hundreds of middle school students gathered at Southern Connecticut State University for the second annual Generationally Enhancing Men (GEM) conference on Friday, celebrating young men of color. Founded by Sean Allen Sr. of the nonprofit Equity Alliance Enrichment, the conference aimed to inspire and uplift attendees through workshops and mentorship from successful men of color. "It’s good for them to feel loved and valued—a goal we achieved today," Allen remarked.
This year, in collaboration with June Archer, who runs the 100 Men of Color Black Tie Gala Awards, the GEM event included the inaugural 100 Young Men of Color Award ceremony. Archer emphasized the significance of honoring young men across Connecticut, marking the nation’s first initiative of its kind. "You see hope and motivation in their faces—this is a brotherhood," he said.
Among the honorees was Josiah Nunnery from Waterbury, whose proud father celebrated his son’s achievements. Keynote speaker Dr. George Fraser shared his insights on perseverance and the importance of relationships, motivating students to embrace life’s challenges. Other speakers included Dwayne Smith, PhD, and State Senator Douglas McCrory, adding further inspiration to the impactful day.
