Bob’s House for Dogs: A Sanctuary for Senior and Special Needs Canines

ELEVA, WI — Since 2009, Bob’s House for Dogs has dedicated itself to improving the lives of “unadoptable” senior and special needs dogs in the Chippewa Valley. This unique organization operates in a welcoming, home-like environment aimed at giving these dogs a second chance. Co-founder Amy Quella’s vision for Bob’s House was born from personal tragedy when her own dog, Bob, was killed in an accident. Inspired by the loss, she and her husband committed to making a difference for dogs in need.

Bob’s House caters especially to dogs aged nine and older, and those with medical difficulties—who often struggle to find homes in conventional shelters. Many arrive in neglectful states, frequently lacking the necessary medical care. Quella disclosed that nearly 98% of incoming dogs require dental surgery to enhance their adoptability.

Moreover, the organization addresses the plight of puppy mill survivors, who often bear psychological and physical scars from cruel breeding practices. It takes time and consistent care for these “mill survivors” to adjust and socialize, with some needing up to a year to feel comfortable around humans.

The organization’s holistic approach includes integrating younger dogs, which can invigorate senior canines and promote a positive atmosphere. Quella likens this dynamic to bringing children into nursing homes—fosters a lively and enriching environment for all residents.

Despite initial skepticism about transforming a traditional shelter model, Bob’s House has gained considerable community support, leading to many repeat adopters. “Even knowing they may only have a couple of years with a new companion, many find immeasurable joy in giving these dogs a loving home,” Quella said. Bob’s House continues to exemplify compassion, providing hope and care for dogs who would otherwise be overlooked.
