White House Criticizes Amazon’s Tariff Display Plans
In a strong rebuke, the White House condemned Amazon on Tuesday for its reported plan to display the cost of President Donald Trump’s tariffs alongside product prices on its platform. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt labeled the move a "hostile and political act," questioning why Amazon did not take similar actions during the Biden administration, which faced high inflation rates.
Leavitt’s remarks followed a report that Amazon would soon reveal the tariff costs directly on the checkout page, potentially causing a significant price increase for consumers. As a result, shares of the e-commerce giant, founded by Jeff Bezos, dipped over 2% in premarket trading.
During the press briefing, a reporter suggested that Amazon’s decision underscored the burden of the tariffs on American consumers rather than on Chinese producers. Leavitt’s response hinted at a broader political landscape, especially as Bezos has recently engaged more closely with Republican leaders.
This controversy comes amid similar actions from other retailers, including Shein and Temu, which have also increased prices due to tariffs. The situation marks a notable rift between the Trump administration and Amazon, particularly given the company’s past financial support for Trump.
