Daughter of Slain UK MP Requests Apology from Rappers Kneecap

Kneecap Controversy Sparks Outrage and Calls for Apology

In light of an investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism unit into a November 2023 video featuring Northern Irish rap group Kneecap, public figures are expressing grave concern. The video allegedly includes inflammatory remarks calling for violence against Conservative MPs, one member reportedly stating, "The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP."

Katie Amess, daughter of the late Conservative MP Sir David Amess—who was murdered in 2021—voiced her dismay over the band’s rhetoric. Speaking on BBC News NI’s Good Morning Ulster, she described the statements as "dangerous" and emphasized the societal implications of such violent language.

A UK government spokesman condemned any threatening remarks directed at individuals, stressing the importance of protecting elected officials from intimidation and harassment, which he said undermines democracy. The government collaborates with law enforcement to address such issues seriously.

Katie Amess expressed her disbelief at the group’s actions, highlighting how their words resonate painfully with her family’s experience. She urged Kneecap to apologize, indicating her willingness to meet them to discuss the impact of their comments.

So far, Kneecap has responded by alleging a coordinated smear campaign against them. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch also criticized the band on social media, insisting that their expressions of "terrorism and anti-British hatred" warrant legal action, especially in the aftermath of her father’s murder.

As investigations continue into the video and another from 2024, no members of Kneecap have been charged. The matter highlights the ongoing sensitivity surrounding political violence in the UK, with two MPs, including Jo Cox and Sir David Amess, being murdered in the past decade.
