Pakistani Military Claims Major Success Against Militants
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – October 1, 2023 – The Pakistani military announced on Sunday that it has killed 54 militants attempting to cross from Afghanistan into Pakistan. This operation took place in North Waziristan, a volatile district in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan.
According to the military, the slain militants are linked to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a group that has allegedly received support from the Taliban government in Kabul. The military’s statement labeled the insurgents as “Khwarij,” a term used by the Pakistani government to describe factions within the TTP. The military further claimed that these militants were dispatched by their "foreign masters" to execute high-profile terrorist attacks in Pakistan.
The TTP has gained momentum since the Afghan Taliban took power in August 2021, raising concerns in Islamabad about its growing capacity to stage assaults. On March 21, a separate operation in Dera Ismail Khan resulted in the death of nine additional militants, further highlighting the ongoing conflict.
In response to these developments, Mohammad Sadiq, Pakistan’s special representative for Afghanistan, urged the Afghan Taliban to take action against the TTP. "Afghanistan has to work with us on this," Sadiq stated during a seminar in Islamabad. He emphasized that if cooperation does not improve, existing agreements may be reconsidered.
This latest incident underscores the complicated relationship between Pakistan and the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, as well as the persistent security challenges posed by militant groups along the border. The Pakistani military remains engaged in a protracted struggle to contain these threats amid geopolitical tensions in the region.
