Fairfield Fill Pile Case Ends with Robert Grabarek’s Sentencing

Environmental consultant Robert Grabarek, owner of Osprey Environmental Engineering LLC, will avoid prison time but pays $30,000 in restitution in the Fairfield fill pile case. Judge Robin Pavia sentenced Grabarek to a one-year suspended prison term with a two-year suspension of his state environmental work license. Fairfield First Selectman Bill Gerber spoke about Grabarek’s alleged damage to the community during the court hearing.

Employees from the Fairfield Department of Public Works shared impact statements, expressing their betrayal and lack of medical testing after working with toxic materials in the fill pile. Grabarek’s attorney claimed his client was not completely responsible for the environmental damage and lack of testing.

Grabarek settled a civil case with the town related to the fill pile scandal, the terms of which remain undisclosed. Despite Grabarek’s protests of innocence, numerous town officials and employees have been affected by the illegal dumping of toxic material in Fairfield. Grabarek is the second-to-last defendant to be sentenced in the case, with former public works director Joe Michelangelo scheduled for sentencing in March.

The case has caused significant environmental damage in Fairfield’s coastal areas, with cleanup efforts expected to last for years. Grabarek’s actions have caused distrust among residents and employees, leading to a push for accountability and consequences for those involved in the scandal.
