Former professional soccer player Joe Thompson has tragically passed away at the age of 36 after a long battle with cancer. Thompson, who played as a midfielder for Rochford and other English teams, was first diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013 and again in 2017. Despite his diagnoses, he was able to return to the field and continue playing soccer.
His wife, Chantelle Thompson, shared the news of his passing on Instagram, describing him as brave and courageous. Thompson’s journey and fighting spirit inspired many, both on and off the pitch.
After retiring from soccer in 2019, Thompson was diagnosed with cancer for a third time in April 2024. He leaves behind his wife and two young daughters. His former teams, including Rochdale, paid tribute to him and honored his memory with gestures of respect.
Rochdale, where Thompson played over 200 games, praised his courage and indomitable spirit. The team wore black armbands and held a minute of applause in Thompson’s memory before a game against Altrincham.
Thompson’s legacy as a dedicated athlete and a loving husband and father will continue to live on through his family and all who were inspired by his resilience.
