Iris Scanning Technology Implemented at Flagler County Jail

Flagler County jail in Florida has implemented iris scanning technology to ensure accurate identification of inmates following the mistaken release of a convicted murderer in Central Florida. Operations Commander Lou Miceli explains that iris scanning is more accurate than fingerprinting and facial recognition, as each iris has 265 unique characteristics. The technology analyzes the iris and stores the image in a database maintained by the company providing the software.

Sheriff Rick Staly emphasizes the importance of eliminating human error in the booking and release process, noting that even the FBI is building a database using this technology. The iris images of inmates are stored locally and compared before release to prevent wrongful releases. Currently, Flagler County’s database contains around 200 iris images, with the number increasing daily.

The sheriff believes that iris scanning will eventually replace fingerprint verification. Inmates are scanned upon entry, and their iris images are compared before release. The technology aims to prevent mistaken releases and enhance the security of the jail. The company providing the iris-scanning software and hardware to the Sheriff’s Office free of charge is helping build out a national iris database with law enforcement agencies across the country.
