Winsted woman charged with nearly 40 counts of animal cruelty.

Local woman, Sarah Smolak, is facing numerous animal cruelty charges after more than 25 dogs were seized from her home in Winsted. This is not the first time Smolak has been charged with animal cruelty, as she was previously arrested in March for similar offenses. The dogs found in her home were underweight, had injuries, infections, and some were unable to walk, requiring medical attention. The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Winchester Police Department and other animal control departments. Smolak is also facing charges of larceny and criminal damage to property for allegedly causing $100,000 in damages to a rented home in Norwalk. The home was left in a state of disrepair, with extensive damage and a strong odor of urine and feces. Smolak has posted bail and is scheduled to appear in court on April 24. Authorities are asking anyone with relevant information to contact the Winchester Police Department.
