Zelensky Plans to Discuss ‘Next Steps’ with Trump Following Call with Putin

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine is set to speak with President Trump after the American leader’s call with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia. The Kremlin has announced that Putin agreed to a limited cease-fire to halt attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Zelensky expressed openness to the offer but mentioned the need for U.S. monitoring for it to be successful.

However, there still seems to be a lack of trust between Ukraine and Russia, as both countries accused each other of attacks on energy infrastructure. Zelensky has criticized some of Putin’s conditions for a broader cease-fire, viewing them as stalling tactics to strengthen Russia’s position on the field.

Ukraine had previously agreed to a 30-day unconditional cease-fire proposed during talks in Saudi Arabia, which aimed to bring a temporary halt to hostilities across land, air, and sea. Zelensky emphasized the importance of negotiations for a longer-term peace during this period.

Despite the discussions and proposals, Zelensky believes Russia is not ready to end the war and is continuing to impose additional conditions. The situation remains delicate, with Ukraine looking for support from the U.S. to navigate the complexities of the ongoing conflict. Anastasia Kuznietsova contributed reporting to this article.
