Rep. Al Green of Texas was removed from the House chamber during President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress after disrupting the speech by standing and shaking his cane at the president. House Speaker Mike Johnson admonished Green for not upholding decorum and ordered him to be escorted out. Green cited his conscience in opposing Trump’s policies, particularly on health care, as the reason for his protest. Others in the chamber also showed signs of protest, including wearing pink to support women’s rights, wearing blue and yellow ties in support of Ukraine, and holding signs against Elon Musk and in support of Medicaid and veterans. Democrats were encouraged by party leaders to show proper decorum and focus on the impact of Trump’s policies rather than making the protest about themselves. Despite the chaotic scene, Democrats tried to stay on message and highlight the issues they disagreed with in Trump’s speech. Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove even walked out of the speech, calling Trump’s remarks “shameful.” Overall, the disruption caused by Green and others in the chamber demonstrated the strong opposition to Trump’s policies among Democrats.
