‘Anora’ Takes Home Best Picture Award at 97th Academy Awards – NBC Connecticut

“Anora,” a gritty and unconventional strip club Cinderella story, took home the coveted best picture award at the 97th Academy Awards. Director Sean Baker’s Brooklyn-set farce, made for just $6 million, beat out big-budget contenders like “Wicked” and “Dune: Part Two” to win the top prize.

Baker, whose film “Anora” has been praised for its unconventional storytelling, also took home awards for best director, best original screenplay, and best editing. The film’s star, Mikey Madison, won best actress for her breakthrough performance.

The night also saw Adrien Brody win his second best actor Oscar for his role in “The Brutalist,” beating out Timothée Chalamet for the title of youngest best actor ever. The Oscars also celebrated diversity, with awards going to films like “No Other Land” and “I’m Still Here.”

Host Conan O’Brien, in his first time hosting the Oscars, kept the tone light with his signature self-deprecating humor. The ceremony was notable for its lack of political commentary, focusing instead on celebrating the magic of cinema in the wake of a challenging year for the industry.
