Two buses collide in Bolivia, resulting in at least 37 fatalities and 39 injuries

A tragic bus crash in Bolivia has left at least 37 people dead and dozens more injured. The incident occurred on the route between the cities of Uyuni and Colchani in the western Potosi region, when one of the buses swerved into the oncoming lane. The crash occurred on Saturday at 7am local time, with one of the buses heading to Oruro, where a major carnival celebration is taking place. The town of Uyuni, where the injured were taken to hospitals, is known as the gateway to the Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat.

Police are working to identify the victims of the crash, as well as those who were injured and hospitalized. Images from the scene show the devastating wreckage of the buses and the bodies of the victims strewn across the high Andean flatlands. It was reported that one of the drivers, who both survived the crash, was seen consuming alcohol by passengers.

Bolivia’s mountainous and under-maintained roadways are known to be some of the most dangerous in the world, with an average of 1,400 people killed in road accidents every year. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for increased supervision on Bolivia’s roads to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
