The Pentagon is sending nearly 3,000 additional active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in response to President Donald Trump’s push to clamp down on illegal immigration. This deployment includes soldiers from Fort Carson and Fort Stewart, with Stryker brigade combat teams and a general support aviation battalion being sent to provide transportation, engineering support, and detection and monitoring. The new troops will join the existing 9,200 U.S. troops already at the southern border, including both federal orders and National Guard troops.
The goal of this deployment is to reinforce and expand border security operations in order to seal the border and protect the territorial integrity of the United States. Trump is determined to increase the military’s involvement in efforts to shut down the border and deport detained migrants back to their home countries.
Military personnel have been regularly sent to the border since the 1990s to address various issues, including migration, drug trafficking, and transnational crime. This latest deployment comes as part of Trump’s broader agenda to tighten immigration controls and fulfill his campaign promise of increased border security.
